Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT) is a disruptive technology which has been fundamentally transforming our everyday life, including many exciting applications such as smart cities, smart home, connected healthcare, etc. However, this revolution will not be viable if we cannot provide a secure connection. The current communication networks are protected by cryptography, which requires a symmetric key for the encryption and decryption. Existing key distribution algorithms are based on complicated mathematical problems, but many IoT devices cannot afford them because of the limited computational capacity and energy (battery powered). There is an emerging technology, namely key generation from wireless channel, which has demonstrated a great potential in establishing keys for the IoT in a lightweight manner. The wireless channel between any two devices is unpredictable and dynamic, and its common randomness can be exploited as the cryptographic keys to enable secure communications. This talk will review the latest research trends and introduce our recent work in this exciting area.

Bio: Dr. Junqing Zhang is a Tenure Track Fellow (Assistant Professor) with University of Liverpool, UK. He received the B.Eng and M.Eng degrees in Electrical Engineering from Tianjin University, China in 2009 and 2012, respectively, and the Ph.D degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from Queen's University Belfast, UK in 2016. From Feb. 2016 to Jan. 2018, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Queen's University Belfast, UK. His research interests include Internet of Things, wireless security, key generation and radio frequency fingerprint identification. His work aims to design innovative and practical wireless security solutions for future wireless technologies with ultra-low energy requirements but high security standards.
